With such a rich, varied and protected history on the site, our conservation and restoration concept is crucial: any new build will be confident and carefully considered insertions into the historic fabric of the site, and where possible the historic elements of the site will be restored and preserved.
The design response accounts for the fitness of the existing buildings for modern living and the requirement for returning the density of the site to its historical precedents. The existing Baroque and Gothic fabric is a valuable asset however rather than providing a mimetic response, we have proposed new build insertions.
While uncompromisingly contemporary, these insertions are a direct response to the brief. Proportional massing and the use of reflective materials mirror the surrounding context, aiming to evoke rather than replicate the historical fabric.
The inner courtyard is designed as the main public area with an adjacent performance space and restaurant, animating the complex and creating a destination for the city.
The proposed roof is made of painted oxidised brass roofing shingles, laid in a similar manner to traditional clay roof tiles. The metal roof is laser-cut to reveal areas of glazing; essentially it is a mesh over the fenestration. The radomness of the laser-cut pattern allows the roof openings to be integrated into the roofing system, rather than puncturing the roof fabric. The glass and openable skylights are behind the oxidised brass screen, and only reavealed through the laser cut pattern. Due to the angle of the roof, the glass will never be visible from the street, as it is recessed behind the patterned screen.
This project aims to rejuvenate the derelict site and surrounding areas by creating a new mixed use scheme that incorporates a performing arts space, restaurant, spa, residential and office accommodation, underground car-park and landscaped gardens.
