Jay Bargmann is the Vice President of Studio Seilern Architects where he directs the delivery of all of the firms projects. Mr Bargmann was the managing principal of Rafael Viñoly Architects, a firm he started in 1983 with Rafael Viñoly. The firm has an international reputation for the design and delivery of convention centers, performing arts centers, university campuses, research and health care buildings, airports, residential and commercial buildings. Upon the death of Mr Vinoly, Mr Bargmann left the firm he started to join Studio Seilern Architects USA.
Mr. Bargmann grew the firm to 300 architects with annual billings of $100 million and opened offices across the United States, in Asia, the United Kingdom and the Middle East. He has prioritized diversity within his firm for 40 years, ensuring that the firm is robust, vital, innovative, and resilient while offsetting systemic bias in the design and construction professions. As a result, people of color comprise 60% of the firm’s architects and 40% of the firm are women.
Mr Bargmann’s area of expertise is the management of master plans and large-scale projects, which are designed and procured through a fast-track or multiple bid package methodology. He developed and implemented a unique project delivery system which seamlessly weds the construction process to design and documentation. Engineers and builders are integrated into the core architectural team, facilitating the development of innovative designs within the context of realizable building technologies and pre-established budgets. Utilizing this methodology, he has delivered complex projects in 40 percent less time than traditional procurement methods. One example is the 4,900,000 square foot campus for New York University which was designed, approved and completed within 48 months.
Other significant projects which he has been responsible for include the National Medal of Honor Museum, the Nasher Museum at Duke University, Palmer stadium at Princeton University, the Stanford University Hospital, the Bronx County Hall of Justice, The University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, the Tokyo International Forum and the MGM Grand project in Abu Dhabi.
Mr.Bargmann holds a US patent on a flexible modular furniture, lighting, utility distribution and enclosure systems that allow unparalleled flexibility and variety in the fit-out of research laboratories. This system has been used in projects delivered by Mr. Bargmann including the Van Andel Institute, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the University of Pennsylvania Translational Research Center, the Bard College Research Building and The Rockefeller University River Campus.
Mr Bargmann participates in design juries, lectures in the US, England, Czechoslovakia, Russia and the Middle East. His projects have been published in books and periodicals around the world.
