In collaboration with Behnisch Architekten, SSA was shortlisted to the final competition stage for Düsseldorf’s Opera House of the Future. The proposal envisions a civic cultural anchor that reconnects the opera with its neighbourhood, creating an open, accessible destination that integrates performance, education, and public life within the city.
Set within Düsseldorf’s pedestrianised centre, the proposal envisions a civic cultural anchor that reconnects the opera with its surrounding neighbourhood, creating an open and accessible destination that integrates performance, education, and public life within the city.
The proposal balances the technical and acoustic requirements of a contemporary performance venue with an open and civic architectural language, establishing the opera house as both a cultural institution and a publicly accessible gathering space for the city. At its heart is a 1,300-seat Opera Auditorium, designed to accommodate world-class opera and musical performance while serving as the principal venue within the wider cultural complex.
At rooftop level, the 600-seat Studio Stage enjoys expansive views across the Düsseldorf skyline. A glazed wall positioned behind the stage allows the city to become part of performances and events, with integrated blackout shades providing flexibility for different production requirements.
